Review from issue 70

Piaggio’s MP3 LT is the only 400cc scooter you can ride on a car licence, Pete Henshaw explains how:

ENGINE: Liquid-cooled four-stroke
single, 399cc
MAX POWER: 34bhp @ 7250rpm
MAX TORQUE: 28ft-lb @ 5250rpm
WHEELS/TYRES: 12-inch front, 14-inch rear
BRAKES: 2x 240mm discs (front),
1x 240mm disc (rear)
LENGTH: 2180mm
WIDTH: 745mm
WEIGHT: 253kg (dry)
FUEL CAPACITY: 12 litres
PRICE: £6499

Every scooter importer in Britain has a dream group of people that they want to sell scooters to – and it’s not us. Obviously they’re delighted if we go out and buy a new Vespa, Aprilia or Honda scoot and they’ll look after us if we do. But there are less than five million two-wheel licence holders in the country and many of those are car drivers with a provisional two-wheel entitlement that they’ve no intention of using.

No, the real untapped market lies in the vast mass of car drivers. According to the DVLA over 36 million people in this country (20.3 million men, 16.4 million women, if you’re interested) have a full car licence.
Another six million or so have a provisional and haven’t passed their test yet. Persuade just 1 per cent of that lot to buy a scooter and that amounts to nearly half a million extra sales. The trouble is that all of those potential buyers are put-off scooters by the lack of weather protection and vulnerability on the road.
